Course Description:
Blue carbon is the term used for carbon captured by the world's ocean and coastal ecosystems.  Around 50-70 percent of atmospheric carbon captured by living organisms is stored in coastal and marine ecosystems (CMEs).  Given its potential as one of the climate change measures, Blue Carbon can play a significant role in the Ocean Economy.  A number of international climate policy measures recognizes the potential Blue Carbon and its inter linkages with Ocean Economy.  This lecture will review the potential for Blue Carbon, its relevance to the Ocean Economy in the context of Mauritius and provide an overview on how international climate change and Ocean Governance policies can be harnessed.
